The following is a list of awards, nominations, and special scholarships that I received in recent years.
In 2001, my PhD thesis, "A Pattern Approach to Interaction Design" was elected Computer Science Thesis of the Year 2000 at Darmstadt University, and nominated for the Dissertation Award from the German Computer Science Society (GI) as Best Thesis of the Year. This year, fourteen dissertations in Computer Science throughout Germany have been nominated. The award winner will be announced during a ceremony in May 2001. (I translated the German description above.)
In 1998, WorldBeat received the 1998 Multimedia Transfer Award as one of the top nine academic software products selected from more than 150 contestants from all over Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
In 1996, WorldBeat was rated a top three exhibit (most interesting and easy to use) in a large-scale visitors poll carried out by the Ars Electronica Center, alongside two far more expensive virtual reality systems.
In 1994, the OSF/Motif interactive tutorial software package Xmtutor received an "Excellent Software Contribution" award as finalist of the 1994 European Academic Software Award (EASA).
In 1989, I was admitted to the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Scholarship Foundation), which aims at supporting the top 0.5% of German students. I received a scholarship during my complete studies until finishing my Diplom (B.Sc.+M.Sc.) in 1995.
In 1988, I received the DM 5,000.00 Karl Nix Award as best male Abiturient (high school graduate) of the year in the state of Bremen, Germany.
