Dissertation Award
of the
German Computer Science Society

Announcement

Each year, the German Computer Science Society (Gesellschaft für Informatik e.V., GI) gives an award to an outstanding dissertation in the area of computer science. This includes dissertations that further progress in computer science itself, as well as those from application areas in other disciplines, and those looking at the interaction between computer science and society.

1. General requirements

1.1 Mission

The German Computer Science Society (GI) aims to make particularly important dissertations from young scientists known to the public. In addition, the Society wishes to foster the transfer of knowledge from science to engineering, economy and society.

1.2 Award

The Dissertation Award includes a prize of DM 5,000.00.

1.3 Publication

PhD candidates whose dissertations are proposed by eligible institutions present their work at a colloquium, and their theses are published in abridged form in an edited volume, "Top Dissertations of the Year". The thesis receiving the award is honoured especially in the introduction of this volume.

1.4 Award ceremony and announcement

The prize is awarded during the annual conference of the German Computer Science Society by its president. The thesis is also honoured in the bimonthly journal of the Society, Informatik Spektrum, published by Springer Verlag.

2. Application

2.1 Who can apply

Each German universitiy holding the right to bestow PhD titles in the aforementioned disciplines is entitled to propose one dissertation for this prize.

2.2 Application material

Apart from five copies of the dissertation, the following documents need to be submitted:

  • Justification of the proposal by the department
  • Assessments by all referees
  • Curriculum Vitae of the PhD candidate

3. Review process

3.1 Review committee

The decision is made by a committee consisting of representatives from the council of university professors of the German Computer Science Society.

3.2 Selection criteria

  • Originality and depth of the results
  • Presentation of the findings
  • Importance of the dissertation for the advancement of computer science
  • The time to complete the thesis should be the selection criterion among otherwise equal candidates.
